Trimmed Hat and Pill Box Hat Bases
Required tools and
supplies:
X-acto knife and fresh
blade
Metal straight-edge
ruler to use to press against and make perfect
creases
Tweezers
Cutting mat
Detailing scissors
Fast-grab, quick-dry
white craft glue that dries clear
Small piece of aluminum
foil to use as a glue pot
Artist's paint brush to

You're choice
of feathers, ribbon, fabric, rhinestones and/or
flowers to cover hat bases.
1. Cut out all pieces.
Fold the two lines of small tabs against a
straight-edge ruler.
2. Make sure that the
hat forms a nice curved shape. Accomplish this by
wrapping cylinder piece tightly around a shaft such
as a pen for a minute, then release.
3. Glue side tab
of cylinder piece.
4. Slip bottom
line of small tabs through the opening hole of hat
brim piece (printed side of brim is pointed
skyward). Glue printed side of tabs against blank
surface of hat brim.
5. Flatten the
tabs found on the top of the hat cylinder.
6. Glue blank
surface of other hat brim against blank surface of
hat brim already on hat assembly.
7. Glue small
circle to top of hat on the tabs.
8. Wind long piece
around pen shaft to get a nice curved piece.
9. Glue other round
circle to the inside of the hat.
10. Glue long
piece to inside of hat cylinder. Glue blank surfaces
together.
11. This is a
view of the finished hat base.
12. Unadorned, this
hat fits in the larger hat box. If your decorations
are going to hang past the brim edge, feel free to
trim the brim.
13. The pill box hat
assembles similarly. Create the cylinder, but glue
bottom line of tabs to the inner blank surface of
the cylinder.
14. Fold flat
the tabs at the top of the cylinder.
15. Glue circle to the
top of the tabs.
16. Glue second circle
to the inside of the hat. Line the sides with the
long panel.
